HOW TO CAST

MY CASTING DIDN'T GO WELL

Use & Care

Care:

  • Use light soapy water or antibacterial wipes to clean the plastic shell and non-porous liner of the prosthetic.
  • Hand-wash pads as needed and let them air dry.
  • Remove any hair or dirt from the hook and loop straps with a wire brush, gently brushing in one direction on the hook side only

Use:

  • It is required that you follow the break-in period protocol for your dog. This helps to prevent irritation and allows your dog to become comfortable when wearing their prosthetic. Failure to follow the break-in period could result in further injury to your dog.
  • Depending on your dog's temperament and comfort level, laying down with the prosthetic could be easy or could require assistance.
  • You will need to help your pet with going up and down stairs while wearing the prosthetic.
  • Your dog may wear their prosthetic whenever they are active, both indoors and outdoors. Partial Limb Prosthetics are waterproof and therefore can be used in the water, such as for hydrotherapy sessions.
  • Remove your dog's prosthetic when they are not active for extended periods of time. This allows their leg to relax, prevents irritation, and allows their skin breathe.
  • Once your dog has successfully completed the break-in period without irritation occurring, they may wear their prosthetic for up to 14 hours a day. Wearing the prosthetic for longer than 14 hours could result in irritation and/or injury

Break in Period:

  1. Once you receive the Partial Limb Prosthetic try it on your pet and inspect the fit.
  2. Upon first inspection check the height. It should be slightly shorter than the sound leg to prevent dragging.
  3. Check the edges of the prosthesis to ensure that there is no pinching or digging into the body.
  4. Start with a short controlled walk the first day.
  5. For best results, place the prosthetic on your pet for only half an hour the first day. You can typically increase this time by a further half hour each subsequent day.
  6. Inspect your pet's skin/hair after each use to ensure there is no irritation or redness and/or hair loss.

Please keep in mind that the break-in period and time of each increment will depend on your pet's diagnosis and overall acceptance of the prosthetic.

Materials:

  • Outer Shell: polypropylene, polyethylene, co-polymer
  • Inner Liner: closed-cell polyethylene foam

Casting Tips:

When casting for a prosthetic it is important that you capture the distal end of the stump. The best way to do that is to keep the cut strip above the distal end of the stump about ½ of an inch, this will help allow you to capture the distal end in full.

If you have any concerns please send pictures and videos to care@aocpet.com.

FAQs

FAQS

WHAT IS INCLUDED WITH THE PURCHASE OF A partial limb prosthetic?

Purchases of our partial limb prosthetics include a free casting kit, which you will use before we begin fabricating the prosthetic itself. Once you have cast your dog's leg - or legs if you are ordering a pair of prosthetics - you will mail us the casts. At that point we craft your prosthetic order based on the cast of your dog's leg, and then send the prosthetic back to you.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE prosthetic DOES NOT FIT CORRECTLY?

Please contact us and we will work with you to find the fit! The hook and loop straps give you some freedom to adjust the prosthetic yourself. Depending on the issues with the fit, we may instruct you to ship it back to us for more extensive modification.

Please note it is imperative that you take an accurate cast of your dog's leg in order for the prosthetic to have the best possible fit. Please refer to our casting directions and be sure that you are familiar with them before attempting a casting.

WHAT IF MY DOG'S prosthetic NEEDS REFURBISHMENT?

Refurbishing your dog's prosthetic is easy. Strap replacements are free within the first 90 days of your purchase if you order and replace them yourself. We offer various methods for refurbishing your prosthetic depending on what needs to be done. You can order new Straps (1 inch or 1.5 inch) and Pads to replace on your own. If your dog's prosthetic needs more than just the straps and pads to be replaced, please contact us at care@aocpet.com for the prosthetic refurbishment process.

HOW OFTEN CAN MY DOG WEAR THIS prosthetic?

There is a two-week break-in period where you will gradually increase the time your dog wears their Partial Limb Prosthetic by 30 minute increments. Once this period is complete, you may leave the prosthetic on your dog for up to 14 hours a day. However, be sure to remove the prosthetic when your dog is resting, this will prevent irritation and allow their leg to air out. Check for any signs of irritation and/or swelling after removing the prosthetic.

Please remove the prosthetic before your dog goes to bed at night.

CAN MY DOG USE STAIRS WHILE WEARING THIS prosthetic?

Yes! However, give your dog a few days of using the prosthetic before they attempt stairs. If they seem to be adjusting well to the prosthetic and moving comfortably, you should be able to introduce stairs. Be sure to supervise their first few attempts.

HOW LONG IS THE FABRICATION PROCESS?

Once we receive the cast of your dog's leg, it takes 2-4 weeks to fabricate the prosthetic.

HOW LONG WILL SHIPPING TAKE?

We offer free 5-7 business day ground shipping in the US for both the casting kit and custom prosthetic, as well as 2 Business Day or Overnight shipping options for an additional charge. If you select an expedited shipping option, we will ship the casting kit to you based on that option. Once we receive the cast of your dog's leg and fabricate the Custom prosthetic, we will ship that using the same option you selected at checkout.

IS THE CASTING PROCESS DIFFICULT?

The difficulty of casting will depend on your dog; more anxious or badly injured dogs may find the process more distressing. It is recommended that you perform the process with at least 3-4 people depending on your dog's energy level.

Detailed instructions on how to cast are included in the casting kit. We can walk you or your veterinarian through the casting process, so please contact us with questions or concerns before you begin casting your dog's leg. We also offer FREE on-site casting at our Arden Hills, Minnesota location.

Wonderful service, awesome prosthetic

After buying a prosthetic from a different company that ended up being horrible and harmful, I am so glad I ended up choosing a prosthetic from Animal Ortho Care.
The service has been wonderful (I have been bugging them with a LOT of questions) and they have answered all of it. The prosthetic looks great and Maggie seems to really like it too. We are still in the "getting used to it" phase, so might need some small adjustments, but I have no worries that AOC will help us out if need be.
So can definitely recommend Animal Ortho Care, and I am even considering getting Maggie a second prosthetic! (don't want Maggie to be without one if the one we have now needs adjustments or parts needs to be replaced)

Hey Trine,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review and provide your experience with working on getting the prosthetic. Looks like we are still working towards the final goal!

Respectfully,
AOC

Phryne lost part of her foot when she was a baby. She doesnt let that slow her down but she does get tired easily. This was so worth the time and price. Her life will only go up from here!

Hey Katie,
Thank you for much for the update on Phryne. We love that we can be apart of her journey and provide a tool to give her an increase on quality of life! We wish you and Phryne all the best.

Respectfully,
AOC
