How does this Custom Dog Knee & Hock Brace help my dog?
AOC's Custom Dog Knee & Hock Brace assists with healing from injury and also post-surgery. Additionally, our custom braces help with chronic conditions like arthritis. As a pair, these braces helps with giving added support to your dog's weight bearing leg following the injury of one leg.
What is the difference between the Custom Dog Knee & Hock Brace and Performance Dog Knee Brace?
Our Custom braces are built specifically for your dog. Measurements aren’t needed for this type of brace. Instead you or your vet would take a cast of the area. The cast is then used to build a custom brace. Little or no adjustments are needed to fit our custom brace. Additionally, this product is designed to also affect the hock (the raised area of the ankle on the back of your dog's leg). If your dog has injuries, conditions, or is recovering from a surgery that affects both the front and back of the leg, the Custom Dog Knee & Hock Brace provides optimal support.
The Performance brace is a standard size off-the-shelf brace that offers a customizable solution to injury stabilization following injuries and surgery to the knee (stifle) and specifically the Cranial Cruciate Ligament. It has a 6-18 month treatment time. Sizing is based from measurements of your dog, which are listed on the product page. You may need to make adjustments to the brace in order to fit it properly.
What is included with the purchase of a Custom Dog Knee & Hock Brace?
Purchases of our Custom Dog Knee & Hock Braces include a free casting kit, which you will use before we begin fabricating the brace itself. Once you have cast your dog's leg - or legs if you are ordering a pair of Custom Braces - you will mail us the casts. At that point we craft your brace order based on the cast of your dog's leg, and then send the Custom Braces back to you.
What happens if the brace does not fit correctly?
Please contact us and we will work with you to find the fit! The hook and loop straps give you some freedom to adjust the brace yourself. Depending on the issues with the fit, we may instruct you to ship it back to us for more extensive modification.
Please note it is imperative that you take an accurate cast of your dog's leg in order for the brace to have the best possible fit. Please refer to our casting directions and be sure that you are familiar with them before attempting a casting.
What if my dog's brace needs refurbishment?
You can order replacement straps and pads off of our website. Strap replacements are free within the first 90 days of your purchase. If the brace liner needs repair or replacement you will need to send the brace to AOC for repair; this has a cost of $100.00.
Is this brace waterproof?
All of our custom dog braces are made with a non-porous padded liner and a polypropylene plastic. Both materials can be wiped down to dry and/or cleaned. Straps and strap pads will need to be air dried.
How often can my dog wear this brace?
As described in the Care & Use section, there is a two-week break-in period where you gradually increase the length of time your dog wears a Custom Brace. Once that period is complete you can generally leave the brace on your dog for as long as needed during a day. However, be sure to remove the brace at least twice daily so you can examine your dog's skin and fur for any irritation or damage.
Please remove the brace before your dog goes to bed at night.
Can my dog use stairs while wearing this brace?
Yes! However, give your dog a few days of using the brace before they attempt stairs. If they seem to be adjusting well to the brace and moving comfortably, you should be able to introduce stairs. Be sure to supervise their first few attempts.
How Long is the Fabrication Process?
Once we receive the cast of your dog's leg, it takes 2-4 weeks to fabricate the brace.
How Long Will Shipping Take?
We offer free 5-7 business day ground shipping for both the casting kit and custom brace, as well as 2 Business Day or Overnight shipping options for an additional charge. If you select an expedited shipping option, we will ship the casting kit to you based on that option. Once we receive the cast of your dog's leg and fabricate the Custom Brace, we will ship that using the same option you selected at checkout.
Please note that we cannot deliver a Custom Dog Knee Brace to a PO box.
Is the Casting Process Difficult?
The difficulty of casting will depend on your dog; more anxious or badly injured dogs may find the process more distressing. It is recommended that you perform the process with at least 2 people, and may find it easier with 3-4.
We provide casting videos on our website under the Pawcademy section. Instructions are also included in the casting kit. We can also walk you or your veterinarian through the casting process, so please contact us with questions or concerns before you begin casting your dog's leg.
