BUILDING YOUR DOG'S CARPAL BRACE

fabrication time takes 5-7 business days after receiving your cast

HINGE: TAMARACK-TETHER

Most braces are made with a tamarack-tether hinge, which allows for full or restricted ranges of motion, depending on your dog's specific condition and needs. Some diagnoses will require an alternative, Range of Motion (ROM) hinge. There is an additional $200 charge when fabricating a custom brace that requires a ROM hinge.

SHELL

Our shell is constructed from durable polypropylene. The cast you send us forms the blueprint for the shell, so it is imperative you cast your dog's leg correctly. When cast correctly, the resulting custom brace fits the contours of your dog's leg precisely.

PAW SEGMENT

Most dog wrist braces are made without a paw segment. This is especially advised when the dog is particularly active or has a bilateral (both legs) diagnosis. If you are unsure if a paw piece is needed, please contact your veterinarian before ordering.

A dog wrist brace is commonly referred to as a carpal brace or front leg brace.

Conditions That Benefit From a Custom Dog Wrist Brace

  • AOC's Custom Dog Wrist Braces help with injury prevention and recovery
  • The most common diagnosis this brace recommended for is Carpal Hyperextension
  • Custom Dog Wrist Braces can also address angular deformities of the front leg; specifically Carpal Varus (joint bowed outward) and Carpal Valgus (joint bowed inward)
  • This brace also provides support with Radial Nerve Paralysis or Brachial Plexus Avulsion (tearing) diagnoses
  • Wrist Braces are employed in carpal contracture management, stretching the Carpal Flexor ligaments into a more functional position

Benefits of the Custom Dog Wrist Brace

  • Provides support to the affected area
  • Stabilizes the joint
  • Decreases the time and expense of recovery
  • Helps improve your dog's activity level by providing a return to near-normal joint function
  • Allows for easier wound inspection
  • Reduces pressure on the contralateral (opposite) limb, preventing further injury
Features

Features:

  • Custom-fitted to your dog's limb
  • Non-porous medical grade foam cushions and eases pressure on the affected area
  • Durable hook and loop strap system allows easy adjustments for fit and comfort
  • Made in the USA
  • Removable
  • Two-month warranty for brace alterations and modifications
  • One-year warranty for manufacturing defects
  • Lifetime hinge warranty
  • Free replacement straps during the first 90 days

Technology

  • Hand-crafted using vacuum forming and thermal technology
  • Waterproof
  • Tamarack hinges allow motion that mimics normal ligament mobility
  • Tamarack hinges allow for limited or locked range of motion; where diagnosis requires greater range of motion, a specialized ROM hinge can be fabricated with the brace instead

HOW TO CAST FOR A CUSTOM CARPAL DOG BRACE

Care & Use

CARE:

  • Use light soapy water or antibacterial wipes to clean the plastic shell and non-porous liner of the brace.
  • Hand-wash pads as needed and let them air dry.
  • Remove any hair or dirt from the hook and loop straps with a wire brush, gently brushing in one direction on the hook side only.

USE

Break-In Period

Similarly to breaking in a new pair of shoes, the Custom Dog Wrist Brace should initially be worn in short increments as your dog builds up a tolerance to the device. You can facilitate this process by positively reinforcing and rewarding your dog for wearing the brace. For best results, place the brace on your pet for only half an hour the first day. You can typically increase this time by a further half hour each subsequent day. However, the break-in period and time of each increment will depend on your pet's diagnosis. Be sure discuss any changes with your Animal Ortho Care practitioner and/or veterinarian.

If there is any irritation or skin breakdown, discontinue use of the brace for one full day. If irritation continues, contact your veterinarian.

Skin & Brace Examination

It is crucial that you thoroughly inspect your pet's skin after each use of the Custom Dog Wrist Brace. This is especially important during the initial break-in period. While it is not uncommon to see minor problems for the first few weeks of brace usage, make note of any blisters or other unusual marks on the skin. Skin redness that does not disappear within an hour after the brace is removed and other signs of skin breakdown are indications of excessive pressure from the brace. The brace can easily be modified to relieve these areas of irritation.

You should also carefully examine the brace itself after each use. Identify any cracks, tears, or areas of unusual wear. Padding and the hook and loop straps can be replaced by contacting Animal Ortho Care. Consult our warranty terms for other details on the service process.

Hygiene & Cleaning

Both the Custom Dog Wrist Brace and areas of skin that come into contact with it must be kept clean. This reduces the chance of your dog contracting contact dermatitis or other skin conditions. Regularly clean the brace with a mixture of half water, half isopropyl alcohol. After cleaning, dry with a towel or let the brace dry at room temperature. Do not speed the drying process through use of applied heat, such as from a hair dryer. Never put a wet brace onto your pet, as it will affect the fit. A properly-fitted brace can be worn in water, but should be thoroughly dried after use before re-application.

MATERIALS:

  • Outer Shell: polypropylene, polyethylene, co-polymer
  • Inner Liner: closed-cell polyethylene foam

FAQs

FAQs

What is included with the purchase of a Custom Dog Wrist Brace?

Purchases of our Custom Dog Wrist Braces include a free casting kit, which you will use before we begin fabricating the brace itself. Once you have cast your dog's leg - or legs if you are ordering a pair of Custom Braces - you will mail us the casts. At that point we craft your brace order based on the cast of your dog's leg, and then send the Custom Braces back to you.

What happens if the brace does not fit correctly?

Please contact us and we will work with you to find the fit! The hook and loop straps give you some freedom to adjust the brace yourself. Depending on the issues with the fit, we may instruct you to ship it back to us for more extensive modification.

Please note it is imperative that you take an accurate cast of your dog's leg in order for the brace to have the best possible fit. Please refer to our casting directions and be sure that you are familiar with them before attempting a casting.

What if my dog's brace needs refurbishment?

You can order replacement straps and pads off of our website. Strap replacements are free within the first 90 days of your purchase. If the brace liner needs repair or replacement you will need to send the brace to AOC for repair; this has a cost of $100.00.

How Long Is the Fabrication Process?

Once we receive the cast of your dog's leg, it takes 5-7 business days to fabricate the brace. Expedited Fabrication is available for $150.00, and reduces the fabrication time to 3 business days.

How Long Will Shipping Take?

We offer free 5-7 business day ground shipping for both the casting kit and custom brace, as well as 2 Business Day or Overnight shipping options for an additional charge. If you select an expedited shipping option, we will ship the casting kit to you based on that option. Once we receive the cast of your dog's leg and fabricate the Custom Brace, we will ship that using the same option you selected at checkout.

Please note that we cannot deliver a Custom Dog Knee Brace to a PO box.

Is the Casting Process Difficult?

The difficulty of casting will depend on your dog; more anxious or badly injured dogs may find the process more distressing. It is recommended that you perform the process with at least 2 people, and may find it easier with 3-4.

We provide casting videos on our website under the Pawcademy section. Instructions are also included in the casting kit. We can also walk you or your veterinarian through the casting process, so please contact us with questions or concerns before you begin casting your dog's leg.

Incredible Product!! Best customer service

I’m an extremely happy customer. Not only was the process simple and the instructions clear, but they were true to their word with making multiple tweaks and adjustments so we could make it perfect for my little guy, Declan. The turnaround time for each adjustment was SO quick and the craftsmanship is meticulous! They ended up making something entirely unique (a bumper for his wonky paw!) and I feel so grateful to have found this team. All that really matters is my dog can now happily go frolicking and not risk hurting his deformed leg nor scraping up his paw:) We clocked a couple miles today and he was using the brace it like it was his natural leg, he acclimated so quickly!

Hey AJ,
We are so happy to hear that Declan's modified brace is working well and his paw is protected once again! Thank you for all the kind words, you have been a great client to work with. We hope the best for you and Declan. Please keep us updated :)

Corgi wrist brace

My corgi tore her collateral ligament and surgery didn’t work. We ordered a custom brace from you and it’s working out very well. She is getting used to it and relying a bit more on it each day. The fit is excellent. My only complaint is that it tends to slip a lot. I find I need to wrap her leg w a gauze wrap to help keep brace in place. The sock was too thick and if it had any wrinkles in it she would develop a rub. Overall I’m so happy w the brace. It has allowed her her freedom to go about her regular day following me around our horse barn. She plays w her brother , chases her toys and has even gone swimming in it so she and I thank you!!!

Hi Kristen,
It is wonderful to hear the brace seems to be helping your sweet Corgi. I'm so sorry to hear the sock was a bit too big for the dog's leg. The sock helps with moisture wicking and extra padding. This sock does not need to be used but we include it just in case it would be helpful. We are happy to hear the gauze wrap seems to be helping while your dog wears the brace We hope for continued improvement for your dog with each day. Please do let us know if you have questions along the way. Thank you for taking the time to write us a review.

Too soon to tell. She has only had the brace just over a week to wear it since it has been back. When we first got it the paw section was attached an she would not use it. So far the barce has lost one screw in the time she has had it. That has limited her use of it. So we'll it may have been 60 days since order many days have been spent in transit I guess. She has only had like two week maybe 3 weeks actual wear time total. And the first first week or so she refused to use it with the paw section. Now with it removed it seems to be much better outdoors on soft surfaces. She still doesn't like it when it hits a surface where the plastic is going to touch and make noise. Not sure if it is the noise or pain. This happens on pavement, concrete, and hardwood surfaces.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for the message. Glad to hear your dog is doing better with the paw section removed. If you have concerns about the fit of brace please do not hesitate to reach out to customer care. As the dog starts healing, your dog's gait should hopefully improve as well.

Awesome support

My doberman has a front right ankle that turns in. The brace has given her great support. No more stumbling on our walks.

Great Support Bad Timing

The support was what I ordered and built of quality materials. It would have been perfect. Unfortunately, due to a delay at the manufacturer which was beyond their control, the brace came one week too late in order to fit properly. I decided not to send it back for adjustment, which I could have done. However, due to the type of illness my dog suffered from it would have been too late yet again. Ortho Care did the best job they could have possibly done and I would definitely order again from them. Thank you Ortho Care!!
